Chapter Twelve

Solgre lay in bed, head pounding, eyes closed because his vision was going in and out. There was also an insistent ringing in his ears and what felt like a million needles poking him from head to toe. Margie had left before sunrise and Solgre already missed her presence. There hadn’t been enough room on the narrow bed for her, but he hadn’t minded. He’d liked the feel of her warm skin pressed against his side.

A burning pain licked the top of his toes. He gnashed his teeth together. Every day seemed to bring a new symptom to light. Symptoms he hadn’t known were associated with his condition. With the advancements in medicine and technology, Solgre was certain he was the first Thellian in generations to have the ventenax disease progress as far as it had. Wouldn’t the med techs like to get their hands on him now?

A chuckle bubbled from his chest.

The med techs would run a slew of tests on him. There would probably be medical studies done and shared as a case study on what would happen if medications weren’t available, and the subject was on an oxygen rich planet. He had to admit, this was an interesting development. It would be even nicer if it weren’t happening to him, though.

Solgre laughed deep in his throat. Here he was, the day Kien was to return with his medication, actively dying. A smile stretched across his lips, as painful as that was to accomplish. He couldn’t help it, because despite the pain and impending death, there was a lightness in his heart. He couldn’t say he was the happiest he’d ever been—because pain—but he was content. While he’d love the chance to get to know Margie better and to spend time with her, the warm feeling in his chest had his pounding brain thinking if he died today, it would be alright.

“Solgre!”

Solgre’s head swam. He heard Phate yelling and understood why there was panic in his voice, but Solgre couldn’t bring himself to care enough to open his eyes or respond. Why should he wake when all he would find was more pain and an empty bed? Solgre breathed deeply, inhaling her lingering fragrance.

Cocoa butter.

At least he would die with her beautiful face burned behind his eyelids and her scent in his nostrils. Yes, this was a good day.

“Solgre! Wake up!”

Ah, there was the matter of Phate and Kien. The thought made him frown. He hated leaving them on Earth, but they were in good hands. Tasha seemed to really care for Phate, and Phate was in love with her. Nisha and Kien also had each other. His best friends would miss and mourn him, but they would remember him fondly as they went on to lead very long lives.

Hopefully, not on Earth, because this place sucked. But this was also where Margie was. His heart twisted. He couldn’t tell if it was from sadness or yet another symptom he experienced. Margie would go on too. She was beautiful, smart, witty and funny.
